This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. All the fun of the jazz carnival!

On Saturday (21 August) members of Dave Rae’s Levee Ramblers (‘The Carnival New Orleans Band’ for the day) play just up the road from the band’s regular Springwell base at the Bowes Railway Carnival Day. Stalls, a barbecue, face painting and more. The jazz comes free along with all the other attractions. Oh, yes…climb on board a locomotive if that’s your thing. Pardon me, boy…
Sunday in Durham will take you back to the good old days…Luftwaffe bombing raids, a dose of ‘it never did me any harm’ rationing and other fondly remembered experiences. Yes, it’s Uniformed Services Fun Day on the streets of Durham. View a real life missile launcher, have a go at abseiling (just as well it isn’t 'have a go at launching a missile') and to add at touch of WWII musical authenticity you can listen to/take cover from the Vieux Carré Jazzmen! Didn’t you know there was a war on?
