Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

CD Review: Jocelyn Michelle - Time to Play

Jocelyn Michelle (B3, pno); John Rack, Bruce Forman (gtr); Doug Webb (ten); Steve Mann (ten/alt/sop); Stan Martin, Andrea Lindborg (tpt); Sammy K, Brad Dutz (perc); Gina Saputo, Regina Leonard Smyth (vcl).
(Review by Lance).
Hot on the heels of Thursday's Big Idea gig at the Jazz Café, comes this B3 disc from Hawaii. From 'Howay the lads'  to 'Hawaii the lass' for indeed the B3 machinist is of that gender and, going by the album pic, there will be no shortage of roadies to carry the Hammond, the speaker, and her handbag to a gig on the 23rd floor albeit no doubt supervised by husband, guitarist Rack.
The lady can play, she can swing and, if it's not as funky as the Big Idea, Michelle has her own jazzy thing going for her.
Apart from hubby John's excellent guitar solos, the horns are well featured and the two vocalists slot in perfectly on their individual tracks.
It's cool and relaxed, perfect for that balmy evening in Honolulu after a day on the beach at Waikiki drinking a local cocktail and letting the music and the white rum take over.
Come to think of it, if we ever have a balmy evening on Tyneside, after a day on the beach at South Shields, the music would go down equally well.
Lance.
Jocelyn Michelle - Time to Play will be available soon on Tony Monaco's Chicken Coup Records.
