Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Jam Session @ Jazz Café - August 4

Pete Gilligan (pno); Paul Grainger (bs); Russ Morgan (dms); Bradley Johnston (gtr); Paul Gowland (ten); Rob Bates (dms); Tom Lapworth (gtr); Luke Stuart-Smith (bs); Francesco Falconi (pno).
(Review by Lance).
Circumstances decreed I left early even though there were other aspirants waiting in the wings aspiring to aspire - no doubt First Mate Russell will chart these aspirations.
Gilligan, Grainger and Morgan have long since aspired and, on this balmy evening, they set the standard at an almighty high with Morgan's brushwork as dynamic as any three stickmen combined. Horace Silver's Summer in Central Park had all three artists painting a picture of that idyllic setting (give or take a mugging or two). Bradley made it a quartet then Pete took five leaving Bradley in charge for All the Things You Are and Wave.
PG number 3 Gowland tenorised I'll Remember April and Darn That Dream, Bassist Luke Stuart-Smith,  lynchpin of DUBB, stepped up to the plate for Just Friends and Stella by Starlight had Lapworth, Falconi and Bates joining Stuart-Smith.
There were other highs (Alec J. Gamble could be heard warming up, Debra Milne had arrived and Ian Forbes was about) and, I'm sure, many more to follow before the party was over.
Lance.
