Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Hip Hop Spoken Here - Cantaloop @ Hoochie Coochie. July 31.

(Review by Lance)
What's this doing here? Hardly jazz, I hear you say! Hardly, but, then again, hearing the horn solos it could hardly be anything else!
It was a fun night, pulsating rhythms, indecipherable lyrics and a foot tapping groove that would have brought the ceiling down if there were a flat below. Yes, brought the ceiling down but brought the occupants up wanting a piece of the action.
Don't ask me names although I gather lead singer/bass guitarist is Dannie Dee. I've tried to decipher their facebook page but, written in Hip Hop, translation isn't easy - somebody help me please!
Still, what's in a name? That by which we call a groove by any other name would still stomp our feet.
The lyrics were delivered faster than a Coltrane chorus and my mental capacity, incapable of digesting them, contented itself with enjoying and admiring the delivery and the rhythmic nuances, The trumpet man blew some fiery choruses with the guy on alto not far behind and frequently in front. A great horn duo.
This wasn't a night for dissection - my notebook went out of the metaphorical window after about one number - it was a night to enjoy the action and if that involved shaking a limb or three then so be it!
Catch them when you can.
They're in Scunthorpe tonight.
Lance.
