This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Damian Cook and Sam Dunn @ The Globe Jazz Bar - August 22

There's a band downstairs rockin'. There's a duo upstairs swingin'. Outside there's a whole lotta thundering and lightning going on.
Not that it unnerves our duo.
They've driven up from Salisbury and are en route to Edinburgh with the Jazz Coop providing a convenient hat hanging point.
Our good fortune.
The wrath and anger of Thor fails to deter the Coop faithful who give an enthusiastic welcome - they're mindful of Cook's knockout performance here last year (he's back with band on December 20) - and only the weather wimps have taken a raincheck.
Opening with Tenor Madness, sanity prevails, no paintstripping pyrotechnics, just straight down the middle swing. There's a delightful feeling of pre-bop 52nd St about Cook's playing whilst one man rhythm section Dunn fills the room with harmony.
The interplay between the duo is fascinating each man drawing inspiration from t'other.
Tea For Two - Dunn decides to stand up - Cook switches to clarinet -  plays a Louis Bonfa tune and remains with the Boehm system for the aptly named C'est Si Bon.
A virtuoso-like guitar intro to the equally appropriately named It Don't Mean a Thing if it Ain't Got That Swing keeps our feet tapping and takes our minds away from the rock band downstairs and the ever intensifying storm outside. More exciting interplay before Skylark relaxes us and I Got Rhythm brings the set to a close.
Time to top up on Marston's Pedigree - a tried and tested remedy for all weather conditions.
Clarinet once more for Keeping Out of Mischief Now; a stunning Four Brothers - how can one saxophone and one guitar sound like the Woody Herman sax section?!; Li'l Darlin'; No More Blues and Gentle Rain - the most inappropriate title of the evening!
I venture out into the not so gentle rain, miss the bus, swim to the Central Station, miss my Metro and queue for a taxi.
Newcastle nightlife, however, doesn't let a flash flood bring it to a halt even though the rain appears to have caused the girls' dresses to have shrunk - bring it on!
Bedraggled, soaked and sneezing it has still been a night to remember!
