Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Jazz Café Jam - March 17.

Peter Gilligan (pno); Paul Grainger (bs); Paul Wight (dms) + Joe Fowler (tmb/vcl); Alan Law/Joel Brown (pno); Tom Lapworth (gtr); Fiona Finden (vcl); Stuart Finden/Paul Gowland (ten); Jordan Alfonso (alt); Yuya Honami/Ian Forbes (dms); Alec J. Gamble (cor); Halle Bennett (vcl).
The above is the gist of the evenings performers, there may have been others - apologies if I've missed anyone.
The fortnightly jams just get better and better as do the players and singers - they also get younger. With such a diverse amount of talent it would be unfair of me to single out individuals whether they be seasoned veterans or first timers undergoing a baptism of fire - everyone contributed.
Perhaps Joe Fowler summed it up best on Facebook - "Had an exhilarating sing at the jazz caff tonight. Not necessarily in tune, or time, and not necessarily all the right words, but fun nonetheless! On the other hand, Fiona sung beautifully and Stu was awesome as ever on sax. Loads of mint pianists, Peter and Alan especially. Loved that sax piece from Paul Gowland. Yuya class on drums again and total brilliantness as usual from Paul on bass. Some other cool dudes played too but I don't know everyone's names! Nice to see Lance and Bruce too"

Amazingly the age ranger of jammers varied from 15 year old Joel Brown whose Shearing-like approach drew mega applause to Ian Forbes, the Grand Old Man, of North East drumming who is rumoured to be second in years only to Methuselah.
