The guitar duo has been an interesting offshoot of the jazz mainstream for most of the past century thanks to such legendary names as Eddie Lang, Lonnie Johnson, Carl Kress, Dick McDonough, George Van Eps, George Barnes, Bucky and John Pizzarelli and, in this country, Albert Harris and Ivor Mairants. As recently as Saturday night at the Jazz Café in Newcastle Roly Veitch and Giles Strong maintained the tradition of their predecessors.
Oxley and Meier, two outstanding players of contrasting, yet complementary styles who individually composed most of the pieces on the album have built upon this glorious past and taken it into a new dimension - layering tracks, the tasteful use of some electronic wizardry and utilising nylon and steel string acoustics, electric, 12 string, fretless, slide, synth and glissentar guitars to great effect and, I hasten to add, in a manner unlikely to upset the purists..
The end result is a worthy addition to the guitar duo Hall of Fame.
The duo have been touring since early February but sadly, from a north eastern point of view, mainly in more southerly parts of the UK.
