Class! A word we used to use to describe albums by Peggy and Ella. A word we still relate to Diana (Krall) and others. Ms Tatham isn't one of 'The Others" indeed, on the strength of this album, the lady can stand tall alongside her peers.
Tatham's voice is as expressive as the words demand and often more than they are worthy of. Not that there are any bummers on this set list.
McCoy Tyner's You Taught My Heart To Sing, Nilsson's Without Her, Bob Dorough's Devil May Care, Cool from West Side Story, Herbie Hancock's Double Life, Detour Ahead, Frishburg's Too Long in L.A. - and a version of the title song that completely reversed my previous aversion to this song - just some of the numbers on this beautiful album.
In a world where it seems there is a new jazz singer in every corner bar, jazz club or studio on the planet singing Summertime it is like a breath of fresh air (in this case, fresh air that still manages to incorporate the long gone aromas of Lucky Strike, Gitane, Marlborough without damaging your lungs!) to hear a singer who can interpret contemporary standards in such an exemplary manner.
Not that this is a one woman show! A look at the personnel will tell you this is a singer who deserves the best - and gets the best!
