A British
contemporary super group of sorts. Captain Mainwaring of Roller Trio, Mick
Bardon of Shatners Basson , Joost Hendrickx of Shiver and Matthew Bourne the
doyen of free piano improvisation joined forces to form Tipping Point. The
band, a fairly introspective bunch, as is their music at times, communicated
with the audience only via their music (I got to find out the names of
the pieces played by asking James to write them down for me at the end of the
evening).
The first piece Rat
Bucket was a long, reflective brooder with Bourne creating fascinating
effects on the Nord keyboard. The set concluded with an altogether jollier
number Equanimity which although it didn’t have the audience
dancing on the tables nevertheless had a few people tapping along with
enthusiasm. The Second set comprised of 3 pieces Breath, Earthworm Eye
View, and Bigsaw Jigsaw although I thought there were only
2! A lot of the music was fairly reflective and challenging, and at times
the band, led by Hendrickx’s powerful drumming, managed to hit a bit of a
groove. A highly enjoyable improvised blues encore concluded proceedings. Not a
wild night but always interesting and all the audience members I spoke to
seemed to thoroughly enjoy the evening.Steve H.
