The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Roly Veitch & Giles Strong @ The Jazz Café. February 28

Two guitars, Great American Songbook, Jobim, Django. One student of jazz guitar took a front row seat, another preferred a back row (chattering class) pew. Jazz Café regulars (an amiable bunch) secured the best available seats, the Saturday night drinking circuit crowd behind them at the bar (chatter, chatter).
The front row assembly filtered out the extraneous ‘background’ noise keen to hear Roly Veitch and Giles Strong play some jazz guitar. Whether it be an indisposed James Birkett or last minute dep Roly Veitch, the guarantee of top quality, relaxed jazz guitar held firm. The other half of the equation – Giles Strong – also offered a life time guarantee of first-rate guitar playing. Veitch and Strong selected a few tunes and played them. Easy? If you know how! And these guys knew what to play. It was as if You Stepped Out of a Dream, into the Pink Lane café and came across two great guitarists having a good time. Tasteful throughout (Veitch and Strong don’t play it any other way), Beautiful Love, All of Me, the pad of a thousand and one tunes, a stroll On Green Dolphin Street and Stella by Starlight.
How Insensitive of the barflies to make themselves heard, oblivious to the two craftsmen seated at the front. Musicians tolerate all manner of ‘difficult’ circumstances, Veitch and Strong have, no doubt, encountered much worse and this Jazz Café gig delighted all who were there to listen. Djangologist Strong played some Django with Veitch and invited Mr Ray Burns (harmonica) to join them in their Romany caravan. The duo swept away those Autumn Leaves and went off into the night with Billie’s Bounce.

I've tried adding a comment on the blog for the last hour or so - nothing earth shattering, but just to say how sweetly sublime this gig was - it was easy to get lost in the music and ignore the gobby barflies! Sweet dreams are made of gigs like this!
