Bebop Spoken There

Gary Bartz: ''Music is nature's gift to man. It's the only religion. We're living in a terrible era, but what a beautiful thing music is. Look how it brings us together like religion is supposed to; and with no language barriers.'' (Jazzwise September, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

The WEA and all that Jazz

Remember when Lance read about jazz at the WEA (Workers’ Educational Association) in a brochure that he found on a bus?  Well he wasn’t imagining it, the WEA is putting on 2 jazz courses, starting on Thursday October 30, and running weekly for 7 weeks.  From 1-3pm there is a class called An Improvisation For Musicians. This is a universal approach suitable for any style, blues, rock, classical as well as jazz.  You need some facility with your instrument and a basic knowledge of chords, but you don’t need advanced music theory.
This takes place at the Unitarian Church Ellison Place, in the centre of Newcastle.  The tutor is no less than Steve Glendinning, ace jazz guitarist, well known in the local jazz world. (cost £40 or free to those on benefits).
The other 7 week course is the same day, same place, same price, but it is at the following time of 3-5pm.  This is Jazz Appreciation, tracing the development of jazz from its roots, and you don’t even need any previous knowledge of music, or to be a musician.  Sounds good to me!
To enrol for both or either course, see www.wea.org.uk or telephone the WEA office on 0191 2126100.

I remember the WMA (Workers Music Association) courses at Wortley Hall, Sheffield, in the 60's. My brother taught the Concert Band and there were other sections for BrassBand, Orchestra, Folk, Choirs anj 2 Jazz courses. The "beginners" was run by Owen Bryce and the "improves" by Eddie Harvey. Since they fell out when both played in George Webb's Dixielaners, and Eddie was excommunicated for modernist tendencies, it was quite amusing to watch the interplay.
