This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. RIP Vic Ash.

Simon Spillett sent me the following sad news.
"With great sadness I can confirm that legendary clarinettist and saxophonist Vic Ash passed away this afternoon (October 24), aged 84.
We have lost not only one of the founding fathers of British modern jazz, and a truly gifted instrumentalist, but one of the true gentleman of the music profession. His talent, wit and wisdom will be missed by everyone who knew him - fans and fellow players alike.
Deepest condolences to Vic's wife Helen and their family.
Vic Ash (March 9 1930-October 24 2014)."
Sad news indeed - the first modern British clarinet player. One of the few capable of blowing bop on the instrument as well as being a fine tenor player.
Simon, of course, is perhaps as qualified as anyone to pass on this sad news collaborated with Vic on his autobiography I Blew it my Way - bebop, big bands and Sinatra.
Very sadly missed, may he rest in peace.

I saw Vic Ash many times on a sunday night at the Rialto York, way back on the 50's, remember buying one of my first EP's and it was his
