Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

COMPETITION TIME!!!

Win a Northern Monkey Brass Band High On Life CD and Free Entry for 2 to the launch gig on 6th July at Hoochie Coochie in Newcastle!
We're often approached after gigs by people saying "You should do a version of 'this' tune" or "I'd love to hear you play 'that' tune" etc, so to mark the band's first CD launch, we want you to nominate a piece of music you'd like to hear us play.
The suggestion we like the most will be played at the gig, the person that nominates it will win our CD, 'High On Life', plus free entry for them and a guest to the gig itself.
A few rules/guidelines to keep it clear and simple;
1. You must 'like' the band on Facebook to enter.
2. Post your nomination on our Facebook page.
3. ONE nomination per person.
4. If more than one person suggests the same tune, the first person that posted it wins.
5. The winner will be decided by us, our decision will be final.
6. Competition will close midnight 31st May.
7. We do have several cover tunes that are in various stages of development for us to play in the future, should you choose one of these titles, we'll let you know and you can have another go.
We're looking forward to your suggestions. Good luck from all of us at Northern Monkey Towers.
