Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Death of an Icon - RIP Marian McPartland OBE.

We knew it had to come but even so we weren't prepared for it. I refer to the death, announced yesterday (August 20),.of British expat pianist Marian McPartland, perhaps our greatest jazz export.
Marian was more than just a pianist, albeit a very good one who was never static but always willing to absorb new ideas providing they were harmonically sound. She was also a legend in your own living room via her radio series Piano Jazz. Over a period of 30 years she interviewed just about every jazz pianist of note as well as other instrumentalists and singers. Inevitably she would play a duet with her guest which led to the title of Paul De Barros' superb biography Shall We Play That One Together. An earlier book, by McPartland herself, was also appropriately titled - All In Good Time for, whether playing or interviewing her timing was perfect.
The trio she led at New York's Hickory House with Joe Morello and Bill Crow was arguably the best combo to play that venue. Ironically only yesterday a Piano Jazz interview with Cedar Walton was posted on Facebook as a tribute to the pianist who'd died the day previous.
I am genuinely saddened at the loss of this remarkable woman even though I only heard her live on one occasion - the North Sea Jazz Festival in 1985 - her playing and her personality have left a lasting impression on myself and many many others throughout the world.
Marian McPartland OBE died on August 20 aged 95.
Sadly missed.
Lance.
PS: Wynton Marsalis sums her up beautifully on F/b.
Marian McPartland was a tireless champion for our music -- living proof and the embodiment of Jazz as an international language. A lover of people and an astounding variety of musicians, she was capable of playing in almost every style of Jazz with wit, sophistication and insight. When I was a sophomore in high school, she gave a master class at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts and later invited us to play a gig with her and was gracious and encouraging. Students all over the world have the same story, I'm sure. She will be missed, but the blessing she put on all of us will resonate.

Just played some solo tracks Marian recorded live at Lincoln Center - What's Your Story Morning Glory? I'm a grown man - I shouldn't be crying. But I'm not ashamed. I've lost a wonderful pianist and my favourite facebook friend!
