Bebop Spoken There

Warne Marsh: "At some point, you have to be prepared to create—to perform. It's vital, man, if we're talking about jazz, the original jazz, the performing art. It fulfils its meaning only when you play it live in front of an audience." DownBeat January 1983.

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

More Newcastle Big Band Memorabilia

The trips the Newcastle Big Band made to San Sebastian are the stuff of north east legend and I was fortunate to be a very small part of that legend. Dave Brown (sax/clt) who was heavily involved in setting up the gigs has uncovered some more photos which can be seen here. There are also shots of the band within a band the Tyne River Jazzmen. For those curious, this was in the pre-Sting days!
Lance.
As a footnote, a few weeks back I was in one of the supermarkets and couldn't believe my eyes when I came across a tee shirt with "San Sebastian" emblazoned across the chest. I had to have it even though I still have the faded original jazz festival one. In the above photo I'm the zonked out sax player on the left of the picture. Charlie Carmichael is the soloist and Dave Brown at the far right of the saxes..

It's a small world: when I was a (very) young child my Dad had his own big band, in which the tenor soloist was none other than Dave Brown. When the band disbanded in the late 1970's and Dave moved down to Surrey he kept in touch with my parents via Christmas cards and the like and was delighted to know that the teenaged son of his old bandleader had taken up the saxophone - me!

Fast forward to 2000 and I was in a big band that did a handful of gigs at Ronnie Scott's in Birmingham and elsewhere and who was next to me on tenor? You've guessed it! Dave. The band was co-run by Phil Doggett.

On a more personal note, Dave was a great help with my sound: he was the one who told me to try a more "open" Link mouthpiece back in 2002: I did and it transformed things for me! I'll see if I can dig out a photo of Dave with my Dad's band.
