Bebop Spoken There

Trevor Mires: ''My mum is a Dean Martin fan: I'm not, so I would grab my skateboard and get out of the house whenever I heard "Everybody Loves Somebody, Sometime." ". (Jazzwise, April 2025).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Steve Swallow Quintet Victoria Hall , Geneva. July 22

Steve Swallow (bass guitar); Carla Bley (Organ); Chris Cheek (Ten); Steve Cardenas (El.Gtr); Jorge Rossy (Dms)
(Review by Ron Ainsborough)
Another sell out in Geneva!
This concert took place in a typically continental beautifully  ornate Hall, worth being there for the architecture and interior design alone as well as for the wonderful music.
Your comments, Lance, in the Carla Bley CD review were all reflected in this brilliant concert. Obviously well rehearsed without one note out of place, and yes, Carla Bley is a very economic keyboard player, but perfect in her promoting and prodding of the melody with the rest of the quintet.
Can't give the names of all the Steve Swallow compositions but one I do remember was I would rather bite my grandmother which Steve Swallow explained was the reply Sousa (of marches fame) gave when asked what he thought about this new music called Jazz. Wonderful!!!
All the musicians were great but I think Chris Cheek needs a special mention for some great tenor improvisations.
Again I enjoyed every minute of this concert, but their again I don't take much pleasing as long as H R and melody are there. Seriously though this music was brilliant and the wonderful bass sounds of Steve Swallow are worth listening to if you can catch one of his concerts near you.
Sorry Lance for these belated reviews but I have not been back for long.
Ron.
