Bebop Spoken There

Ron Carter quoting Sonny Rollins: ''What we call jazz - that's keeping the world in equilibrium. I don't care what kind of music you like out here today. It all comes from jazz.'' (DownBeat August, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

CD Review: Charles Evans – Subliminal Leaps

Charles Evans – baritone saxophone, Dave Liebman soprano saxophone, Ron Stablinsky – Piano, Tony Marino – Bass
(Review by Steve Horowitz)
This album was written by Charles Evans specifically for the Soprano Sax of Dave Liebman the album was recorded in St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Pennsylvania.
Dreamed-Out March sees  staccato  type exchanges between Soprano and Baritone then Stabinsky’s light piano takes over  before the horns join in for the finale.
Certain Soprano is a gentle mournful showcase for Liebman’s eloquent soprano. Mahler Method is an extended piece featuring the whole quartet. Interruptions with the non reed players predominant separates this piece from the title and longest track on the album Subliminal Leaps. This is a little more uptempo than the rest of the album with the soprano and Baritone playing off against each other once more. The album concludes with the short piece Reprise.
.Evans and Liebman aficionados  will I’m  sure  enjoy this freely improvised, introspective, tonal work. Personally I found this album rather heavy and quite hard work maybe the absence of any drums to drive the music along contributed to my inability to fully engage with the music. Hopefully this reviewer will reflect on this audio experience with a little more positivity once the subliminal effects of this piece have begun to lodge in his psyche.
Charles Evans – Subliminal Leaps will be  released on the More is More label on September 10.
Steve.
