An international summit meeting! A Yank, a Dane and a couple of Thai musicians.
Berklee graduate Phillips is currently Jazz Educator at Silpakorn Uni in Thailand and bass and drums are two musicians he regularly works with. He considers Techatana-nan the finest drummer in South East Asia and Viryapark he refers to as the first call bass player. Dineson had come to Bangkok to play a few gigs (as you do) and immediately Phillips found a jazz rapport with the Dane. and gave that as the reason for making this recording.
The music is mainly standards but they are done in such a way as to give them an original feel. Much of the music, to my ears, conveys a sense of Lennie Tristano. Probably nothing like it but the feeling is there, Particularly in Dineson's angularity - Warne Marsh meets early Coltrane are the vibes I get. Phillips has that lovely single string style favoured by Charlie Christian, Billy Bauer and all who followed.
Monk's Ask Me Now could easily be put forward as the best ever jazz ballad outside of the Gasbook which of course it isn't but I have to admit I'm pushed to find a better one!
It's given a deserving treatment here.
Other standards include Have You Met Miss Jones, Days of Wine and Roses, Coltrane's Naima, Monk's Evidence, Sam Rivers' classic Beatrice and Strayhorn's A Flower is a Lovesome Thing plus a couple of Phillips' originals.
