Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

That Was The Year That Was.

Amazingly, no one has come up with their Gig of the Year or their CD of the Year apart from Liz who plumped for Seth McFarlane's début album.
So I'm going to give you my favourites - in no particular order.
Gig of the Year.
Simon Spillett at the Corner House.
Greg Abate/Alan Barnes at the Corner House.
Greg Spero at the Bridge.
Daryl Sherman at The Sage
Cecile McLorin Salvant at The Sage.
Swing City Quartet at the Customs House.
New Cool Collective at Hoochie Coochie.
Festivals.
Whitley Bay Jazz Party.
Gateshead International Jazz Festival.
Scarborough Jazz Festival.
CDs
Harry Allen/Scott Hamilton - 'Round Midnight.
Paul Edis Sextet. - There Will Be Time.
Keith Jarrett - Sleepers.
Seth McFarlane - Music is Better Than words.
Greg Spero - Acoustic.
Tommaso Starace - Simply Marvelous.
Nina Simone Collection.
Ellington Saxophone Encounters.
There are, I know, many gigs and CDs I've overlooked so this is why next year I propose to have a CD/Gig of the Month thus drawing up a short list for the end of 2013. Hopefully this will encourage more participation!
Lance.

Hello Lance
Was still mulling over my choice, I've picked out three gigs across the styles which I particularly enjoyed this year. Michael McQuaid's Halfway House Orchestra at WBJP, Steve Andrews/Graham Hardy Quintet at BJC and Watson Walker Edis at the L&P.
CD choice - the previously unreleased Jim Hall Live tracks (two new CDs) with Don Thompson & Terry Clark in Toronto in 1975 with Jim Hall playing with total abandon - just never heard him play in such a 'go for it' almost reckless fashion - quite amazing and great music.
