Bebop Spoken There

George Colligan: ''I think to be a successful musician, you must be versatile to make a living — until you find your niche''. (DownBeat, July 2025).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

A Not so Merry Christmas at The Corner House

The management of The Corner House have decided to apply a considerable hire charge for the use of the Function Room.
Sadly, this has resulted in the Vieux Carré Jazzmen ending their weekly Monday session at The Corner House forthwith.
The VCJ would like to thank everyone who has supported the band for the past 12 years at this venue.

Brian Bennett.

Basically, the fee they've asked for has made the session untenable for the numbers we now average on a Monday night, 25/30 + the band.
Don't know if they plan to to replace the jazz night with something else, but if the function room bar remains closed it's never going to succeed.
VCJ trombonist, Lawrence McBriarty, commented last night that he first played at the Corner House aged 19 - more than 50 years ago - a lot of beer has flowed down the pipe since then! Anyway, hopefully it won't be the end of traditional jazz at the Corner House and that we'll be back there sometime in the future.

What a shame, sounding more like the sort of thing that happens here in Hong Kong...I've had many a happy blow in that room with dad with various bands over the years, and of course, the wonderful shows by the international musicians that have appeared in that room, hope they will see sense and resume sometime in the future.

It certainly doesn't make any sense to me, Colin, to lose 25-30 regular Monday night customers. What next? Turn all the lights off to save money, perhaps?
