Bebop Spoken There

George Colligan: ''I think to be a successful musician, you must be versatile to make a living — until you find your niche''. (DownBeat, July 2025).

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Jazz North East Update.

We're postling to give you brief details of Jazz North East's programme for January and February 2013. For fuller information please visit our website at www.jazznortheast.com or look out for our new seasonal brochure. It's hard to miss -  with the words FIRING THE FURNACE at the top above a photo of a musician who looks like a younger version of a cross between Frank Zappa and Seb Rochford.
These are the gigs:
17th January @ The Bridge Hotel, Newcastle - the Nick Malcolm Quartet. Includes trumpeter Nick Malcolm and Alex Hawkins, keyboards. Alex's 2012 album has recently been named 'record of the year' by The Guardian and Alex will be back on Tyneside as one half of a headlining band in the 2013 Sage International Jazz Festival. An 'On the Outside'  gig. Tickets at the door.
30th January in the Northern Rock Hall @ Sage Gateshead - the Walter Smith III Quartet. Three New Yorkers plus London American bassist Michael Janisch. Rising star saxist Smith was previously seen with Ambrose Akinmusire's Quintet in the 2012 Sage Jazz Festival. A 'Straight Ahead' gig. Tel. 0191 443 4661.
8th February @ the Newcastle Lit & Phil - the Alister Spence Quartet plus veteran British free jazzers Trevor Watts and Veryan Weston. Australian pianist Spence led this international band for our first ever Lit & Phil promotion, and we sold out. Plus on this occasion a very
rare sighting of alto sax man, Trevor Watts, last on Tyneside in 1992 with his Moire Music (African) Drum Orchestra. An 'On the Outside' gig. Tel. 0191 232 0192 for reservations.
13th February @ the Lit & Phil - Steinway Artist Robert Mitchell plus Jazz North East favourite Corey Mwamba, vibes. The two will play individually, Robert's set consisting entirely of  piano pieces for the left hand , then come together for a finale. A 'Straight Ahead' gig. Reservations as for 8th February.
28th February @ the Corner House, Heaton - Simon Spillett, tenor sax, with the North East's Paul Edis Trio. A winning pairing back again for the second time in two years. Named often as successor to the late Tubby Hayes, Spillett's many awards include tenor saxist of the year in in the 2011 British Jazz Awards. A 'Straight Ahead' gig. Tel. 0191 232 1356. Dave Clarke JNE.
