The sad news has come in that Monty Sunshine died yesterday (Nov 30) aged 82. Monty visited the north-east many times during his tenure with the Chris Barber Band and later with his own band. His distinctive clarinet style was one of the hallmarks of the 1960's trad scene although, despite his hit recordings of Petite Fleur and Hushabye he never fully embraced the commercial aspects of trad.
Remembered with much fondness and now sadness.

Sad news about Monty - it brought back memories of some of the first jazz I heard in Ashington. At the time I think Clem Avery's band was resident at the club but it could have been Sheila "jazz" Giles. I remember Monty would not let John Saxelby have a blow.
The band was led by Bob Wallis and the bass player had a broken leg in a plaster cast.
