This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Brenda Sokell - The Singing Pensioner

Singing Pensioners is the rather unfortunate title given to a talent show currently running on the Alan Titchmarsh Show. Not that I've got anything against pensioners - I'm one myself. However, it doesn't do the entrants justice. Local lass Brenda Sokell, a name not unknown to this blog, looked anything but a lady of venerable years as she sang Cry Me A River.
The judges decreed it was a fine performance and Brenda is now in the Final.

yes I wish they would not use that word "pensioners" as many people are in receipt of pensions, young & old. Better yet to say seniors or senior citizens when referring to older people. I have made this point to my local newspaper to no avail.In fact why differentiate at all?

Bren is a fantastic singer, I wish I had been told about this earlier, lets all make sure we vote for her not just because she is a local lass but because she has a fantastic voice.

Hi Lance, just wanted to thank you again for your mention of me in the Singing Pensioner contest. I had a fantastic time on the show and the next day recording at Pinewood Studios to record "White Christmas" with the Chelps. Everyone involved in organising the show and the recording were really helpful and supportive. Tim (my husband) came with me this time (he was to nervous the first time, ha,ha)
I have a cop of the song and it sounds great. It's being released live on the AT show Monday 13th December. Wouldn't it be amazing if it went to no.1 for Christmas!
I hope at least it will get me opportunities for more interesting work. Thanks again and to everyone who supported me. Brenda x
