Sad to hear, once again via LondonJazz, of the death of Herb Ellis pictured left at Newcastle Playhouse in 1984. Herb visited Newcastle frequently. First with Oscar Peterson and Jazz At The Phil then with Peterson and Ella. He also came with the Great Guitars package which included Barney Kessel and Charlie Byrd.
A great player capable of playing in a variety of styles but at his best in a trio setting where his melodic scope and harmonic knowledge was shown at its creative best.
Herb Ellis died March 28 in Los Angeles.

Indeed he was a giant, I remember my first "jazz at the Phil" at Leeds Odeon, it was also the first time I saw Ella performing. My late dad & I went by train , stood in pouring rain in the queue, my shoes took in water..but hey! did it matter? not at all with such performers up on that stage.

I tell you, I had a strong feeling about Herb for no reason a couple days ago so I put on some Herb Ellis and again now. I'm proud to say my first ever jazz gig was a Mr Ellis (at 16 or so in 1987ish?) some place around the northeast. In the middle he played a few bars of the snooker theme tune. I then spent the next few years learning jazz guitar. My humble guitar will weep tonight.
