This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Vieux Carré Jazzmen @ The Corner House

Peter Wright (tpt), Gavin Lee (clt), Lawrence McBriarty (tmb), Brian Bennett (bjo), Brian Sibbald (bs), Fred Thompson (dms/vcl).
Gavin Lee, a surprise guest this week standing in for Barry Soulsby, played some period alto - early Hodges - and New Orleansy clarinet. At times he sounds like George Lewis whilst at other times the spirit of Pee Wee Russell hovers overhead. His "Burgundy Street Blues" and "Caressing You" being typical. The latter tune is a delightful little known (to me) gem.
Peter Wright provided a boisterous lead - he was missing last week, possibly visiting Jericho to check out the walls. Not that it was all fortissimo he had some delicate moments with the plunger that were equally effective. Lawrence, surprisingly, played very few muted solos this week.
Fred Thompson seems to have regained the use of his vocal chords and gave a spirited rendition of "At The Jazz Band Ball."
The band sounded good all round from the opener, "I Want a Girl Just Like The Girl That Married Dear Old Dad" (Remind me that this site is called "Bebop Spoken Here"!) to the penultimate closer, "Hindustan". Stomping good stuff.
