This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Memories are Made of This

Hi Lance, just caught the blog and saw photo of my old mate Dennis Healey on drums. He was a tremendous time keeper--so important for all the Shearing arrangements, but his Idol was Buddy Rich. I believe that I am the only one left from the band at 'La Dolce Vita', as Dennis, Ken Morrell, Derek Dixon, and Art Mowat are all gone--not sure about Bob Stephenson. Ah the memories!! Anne De Vere

Tyne Bridge Publishing (an imprint of Newcastle Libraries publishing arm) has recently published a book
looking at life in Newcastle in the 1960s. 'It's My Life!' surveys popular culture at the time. It has some jazz (and blues) interest including a facsimile of a poster advertising Billy Eckstine at La Dolce Vita. The small print lists 'Dancing to the Bob Stephenson Sextet'. There is an excellent photograph of the Basie Band on stage at Newcastle City Hall and one of the Alan Price Combo featuring Nigel Stanger. The book, a paperback, is available from Newcastle Libraries priced £10.00. (ISBN: 978 185795 138 7). Incidentally, in the photograph taken at the Corner House, who's that standing behind Willie Payne?
