Bebop Spoken There

John Donegan: ''What you take in through your ears can come out through your fingers.'' (Notes to Which Direction October, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Sunday Night @ the Globe: Sara Oschlag w. Arnie Somomgyi Trio - Oct. 25

After hearing Sara at the Lit & Phil's sold-out gig on Friday lunchtime I couldn't wait to hear her again - two days and change seemed a lifetime away.

The rain, the storm and the uncertainty of the rail network precluded my intended trips to the highly successful Durham Jazz Festival so I subjected my self to watching soccer on Sky with wins for Boro, Toon and a windswept draw for the Mackems.

At last the wait was over and I arrived at the Globe. The downstairs bar was wall to wall crammed with folks 'drinking for England'. I correctly surmised they were heading for the nearby Arena where some pop/rock band or other were appearing. I stood perplexed and wondered if I'd put the clocks back by a day rather than an hour until some one informed me that the jazz gig was, this particular Sunday, being held upstairs. Methinks a meeter/greeter would have been useful!

However, I digress and once the show got on the road all that was forgiven and forgotten by the lamentably small audience who were held enraptured in the palm of Sara's hand and by her amazing vocal gymnastics particularly on Mingus Fingers taken even faster than on Friday.

The first set was predominantly the same as on Friday so I'll refer you back to my earlier review (HERE). A tune that didn't make the cut on Friday was Jobim's Dindi given the obligatory bossa beat followed by a blast on Monk's Straight no Chaser that was a real belter. Richard Wetherall was sensational as were Arnie and John. Over the four gigs the rapport between bass and drums had developed into something special.

A short interval before taking East of the Sun even further out than the title implied.
Once again Richard was flying and the fours traded by Sara and John were, I'm sure, more exciting than anything going on across the road.

Harry Warren's This is Always drew on Betty Carter's version with Sara getting just the right amount of sentimentality out of it. Arnie's bass solo too was full of meaning. Arnie and Sara brought in September in the Rain before drums and piano joined the party.

A couple from Friday, Moanin' and Take the 'A' Train, brought this magical evening to a close. The poor turnout notwithstanding this was special - was it not! Lance

In a Mellow Tone; Summer in Central Park; I'm Just a Lucky So and So; Duke Ellington's Sound of Love; Mingus Fingers; Dindi; Straight no Chaser; East of the Sun; This is Always; September in the Rain; Moanin'; Take the 'A' Train.
