Bebop Spoken There

Joe Alterman: ''All I wanted to do growing up was to sound like Erroll Garner playing "Poor Butterfly." I thought that was the coolest sound I'd ever heard.'' (DownBeat November, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Dean Stockdale Trio @ Bishop Auckland Methodist Church - October 9

Dean Stockdale (piano); Mick Shoulder (double bass); John Bradford (drums)

A bright, blue sky afternoon up on Cockton Hill Road. October's Bishop Auckland Jazz session featured the Dean Stockdale Trio - pianist Stockdale, bassist (and gig organiser) Mick Shoulder and drummer John Bradford.

Autumn Leaves. An autumnal beginning, befitting the season. Our three musicians have worked together on numerous occasions, this afternoon's concert would be a breeze. 'Tis Autumn, something of a feature for drummer Bradford, continued the seasonal theme.

Oscar P is rarely, if ever, absent from a Stockdale set list and this afternoon's selection, Bossa Beguine, upped the tempo. On the Outside, Looking In (comp. D. Stockdale) proved more than worthy of inclusion, Pure Imagination, ostensibly an odd choice, somehow works in a jazz context and it did so again today.

Milt Jackson's Reunion Blues, as performed by Oscar P, really lit the blue touchpaper. Fine playing all round. And to close a most enjoyable hour of jazz, another Stockdale favourite (and great arrangement), Have You Met Miss Jones?  Russell

Set list: Autumn Leaves; 'Tis Autumn; Bossa Beguine; On the Outside, Looking In; Pure Imagination; Reunion Blues; Have You Met Miss Jones?
