Bebop Spoken There

Joe Alterman: ''All I wanted to do growing up was to sound like Erroll Garner playing "Poor Butterfly." I thought that was the coolest sound I'd ever heard.'' (DownBeat November, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: 8-Funk - Level Design

Leon Laisne (bass); Luca McCardle (keys); Yuzuha O'Halloran (alto sax, flute); Eoghan McClosky (drums)

I know nothing about video games - I can't even fathom out fruit  machines so I'm probably not the man for the job here. However, it's the music that counts and on that score I'm on firmer ground (I think...).

It's still not easy. I like to equate the music with the title. To do that I'd need a crash course tutored by some precocious child - but which one? There's millions of them and tonight they will be disguised and, armed with pumpkins, out in force terrorising the neighbourhood.

So, back to the music and it's actually very pleasant with catchy themes reminiscent at times of Spyro Gyra - remember them?

The four Dublin based musicians are well versed in jazz and funk. O'Halloran tootles cool flowing lines on both alto sax and flute, Laisne pumps the old lecky bass and McCardle the keys do play. Eoghan McClosky's got the beat his rhythm is something grand. A credit to old Ireland is Leon Laisne's 8-Bit Funk Band.

They (the band) are right, the themes do lend themselves well to jazz/funk renditions. Check it out - available now. Lance

In the list of tracks, the titles in brackets relate to the source.
Bob-omb Battlefield (Mario 64); Down by the River (Baldur's Gate 3); National Park (Pokemon & Silver); Dire, Dire Docks (Mario 64); Sonic the Hedgehog (Green Hill Zone); Chrono Trigger Main Theme (Chrono Trigger)
