Bebop Spoken There

John McLaughlin: ''It was then that Coltrane came along and single-handedly brought this dimension of spirituality into jazz. It was a pivotal experience to me.'' (DownBeat September, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

John Rowland Trio play the music of Lester Young @ Jesmond Library - Oct. 9

John Rowland (tenor sax); Alan Law (keys); Paul Grainger (bass)

The combination of hard-hitting tenor saxist John Rowland and the lighter toned jazz of Lester Young seemed, at least on paper, an unlikely coupling. However, in any activity, the form book can go out the window which it did this afternoon at Jesmond Library. This turned out to be a musical marriage made in Heaven. Spiritually only Billie Holiday got closer to the man she nicknamed 'Pres' (the President).

Rowland captured Young's sound to near perfection: the languid tone, the laid back phrasing, the nonchalant - yet meaningful - improvisations were spot-on. The only way he differed was the angle he held the tenor.

The well-attended lunchtime session (extra chairs were brought into play) featured nine choice standards drawn from Lester's repertoire which didn't change much over the years.

Love me or Leave me got things off to a bouncy start with Grainger and Law adding additional flavour with spicy solos. Jumping With Symphony Sid, named after a NYC deejay settled into a nice easy tempo. There Will Never be Another You eschewed the usual jam session tear up in favour of a more balladic tempo. Alan Law slipped a delightful few bars of 3/4 time into his solo but it didn't disrupt things and the ship was soon back on an even keel.

It's Only a Paper Moon, followed by a beautiful take on These Foolish Things led to the first Basie related number, Lady be Good, originally recorded by an offshoot of the big band. Almost Like Being in Love, Mean to me and the inevitable closer - Lester Leaps in drew the applause then it was out into the blustery wind - but I didn't care!

An enjoyable hour of gentle chamber jazz by three fine musicians. Lance
