Bebop Spoken There

Joe Alterman: ''All I wanted to do growing up was to sound like Erroll Garner playing "Poor Butterfly." I thought that was the coolest sound I'd ever heard.'' (DownBeat November, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Sara Oschlag, Arnie Somogyi & Ben Lawrence @ The Ship Isis - Oct. 23

Sara Oschlag (vocals); Arnie Somogyi (double bass); Ben Lawrence (keyboards)

The Ship Isis on Silksworth Row is a rare example of a surviving/thriving Victorian pub. Previously owned by Cameron's, later a Jarrow Brewery establishment, it is now home (on occasion) to Sunderland's Old Black Cat Jazz Club. The second of four gigs over a long weekend for Sara Oschlag and Arnie Somogyi, their short tour of the region would see them visit Newcastle twice, Hexham, and this Friday evening, Sunderland.

The Ship Isis' wood-panelled, upstairs room is snug, very much a 'pull-up-a-chair' kind of place. Sara and Arnie were joined this evening by pianist Ben Lawrence. In a Mellotone, our trio on fine form from the off. Sara and Arnie, vastly experienced musicians, couldn't have been more supportive of Ben. A trio of equals, an onside audience, all the makings of a great gig.
Summer in Central Park sang Sara. Ah, that would be nice, a few days in NYC, summertime, of course. Dindi, a bossa conjuring warmer climes.

Time for some Monk, by way of Bird, Now's the Time, you could say. Ellington's Love You Madly, Brooks Bowman's East of the Sun (and West of the Moon), all three musicians taking turns in the spotlight. It was time to Take the 'A' Train (Sara's vocal range in evidence), swiftly followed by a metro to Newcastle. It had been a canny night on Wearside. The Old Black Cat Jazz Club's next promotion will be at Sunderland Minster (Friday 20 November) featuring the Customs House Big Band with another star vocalist Ruth Lambert. Russell
