Bebop Spoken There

Joe Alterman: ''All I wanted to do growing up was to sound like Erroll Garner playing "Poor Butterfly." I thought that was the coolest sound I'd ever heard.'' (DownBeat November, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Dean Stockdale Trio @ Bandstand! - October 15

Dean Stockdale (piano); Mick Shoulder (double bass); John Bradford (drums)

Bandstand! Where's that? Ah, well, you'll know it well. Exhibition Park's old cafe, closed by Newcastle City Council (so-called 'austerity' continues), recently reopened by an independent operator, is putting on a regular jazz night. The first of them featured the Dean Stockdale Trio.

And for a first night, SOLD OUT! signs were just what Doctor Jazz ordered. Oscar Peterson's Reunion Blues, the first number. Let's hope it's the first of many in the coming years. Pianist Dean Stockdale (a big fan of OP), bassist Mick Shoulder and drummer John Bradford know the Gasbook well and a chattering bunch in one corner of the room wasn't about to distract them.*

Frank Loesser's I've Never Been in Love Before (from Guys and Dolls), C Jam Blues (to drown out the chatterboxes), Pure Imagination (the twenty-something chatterboxes knew this one), for a first set at a brand new jazz venue, let's give it 8 out of 10.

Interval: Dean, Mick and John tucking in to a wood-fired pizza).

Have You Met Miss Jones? resumed affairs. It's a favourite number of Dean's and he always finds something new in Rodgers and Hart's much performed/loved song. Similarly, Tenderly, Mick's softly-softly approach exactly what was required. Dean chose to go out on OP's Hymn to Freedom. Perfect.

Bandstand! could be a winner, notwithstanding noisy student types. Wood-fired pizzas (dustbin lid dimensions if desired), a good drinks menu, location (you have to make the effort), yes, Exhibition Park could be the new 'go-to' venue. Next month, Thursday 26 November (8:00pm), guitarist Tim 'Bim' Williams will be over from Manchester with his trio.

* Tactful management saw to it that the noisy bunch piped-down second set. They'll get the hang of it. Russell
