Bebop Spoken There

John Donegan: ''What you take in through your ears can come out through your fingers.'' (Notes to Which Direction October, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Single review: Edison Herbert & Ian Lewinson - Togetherness

Edison Herbert (lead/rhythm guitar, keys); Ian Lewinson (lead guitar); Derek Taylor (bass, drum programming); Chris Wells (drums intro)

I don't usually entertain singles, mainly because they're invariably the trailer to the big picture that is coming shortly to a download near you. There's no indication that that is the case here but, so what? It only lasts 4.11 minutes and hey! I can remember in the pre-LP age when singles were what you bought and they rarely lasted more than three minutes. True you got two sides but you never played the B side.

However, I digress. Moving forward to the post-CD era I had the pleasure of hearing and being impressed by Edison Herbert at the Lit & Phil (Dec. 20, 2024). I'm less familiar with Ian Lewinson - indeed I'm not familiar with him at all - but I am delighted that I am now and, in tandem, their playing lives up to the song's title which they co-composed.

Inspired by the landmark George Benson and Earl Klug recording Collaboration, Herbert and Lewinson infuse the spirit and infectious grooves from that album into their own approach making for an almost perfect track - almost... The guitar playing by both players is impeccable, I could listen to them all night, but the metronomic drum programme (the infectious grooves), to my ancient ears just takes the icing off a very tasty cake. But, then again, not everyone likes icing and I'm sure this will be a hit with contemporary guitar enthusiasts.

It's a lovely tune that, with a lyric, would surely enhance any vocalist's repertoire. Lance
