Bebop Spoken There

John McLaughlin: ''It was then that Coltrane came along and single-handedly brought this dimension of spirituality into jazz. It was a pivotal experience to me.'' (DownBeat September, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

R.I.P. Tony Fisher (1936 - Sept. 27, 2026)

Tony Fisher, one of the great British big band trumpet players died on Sunday aged 90. I've heard him play many times  most recently back in 2009 and 2010. That may not sound recent but, in the grand scheme of things, I suppose it is.

In 2009 he was with the BBC Big Band at Sunderland Campus where one of the highlights was Tony's duet with Nigel Carter on Stardust.

A year later I was at the King's Head in Crouch End for Pete Long's Gillespiana. This was one of the greatest big band sessions I've ever heard and not least when the five man trumpet section of Tony, Steve Fishwick, Mark Armstrong, Nathan Bray and A.N. Other battled it out, no holds barred, on Anthropology. It was something else with Tony leading the pack. My heart still races at the memory of that night.

Every trumpet player in the world should blow an unmuted fanfare in his memory.

May he Rest In Peace.
