Standing on Half Moon Lane, Central Bar is not unlike a New York City 'flat iron' in design. The independent pub, situated in the regeneration area known as the 'Gateshead Railway Quarter', welcomed Paris-based violin virtuoso Daniel John Martin. This final concert of DJM's tour of the BSH heartland would, as always, be in the company of Mick Shoulder's Swing Manouche.
From Djangology to I Love You, if you're a Hot Club plus fan (the 'plus' element allowing DJM to stray, not too far, from the Grappelli/Reinhardt canon), this was the gig to get to. And indeed, several Djangologists made their way to Gateshead's flat iron. The phrase 'casual brilliance' best describes DJM. A cast iron technique, a bravura flourish, a spontaneous vocal, DJM is the 'real deal'. When touring 'up north' it helps to have three of the finest alongside: Mick Shoulder (guitar), Dave Smith (rhythm guitar) and string bassist Paul Grainger.
