On a breezy, blue sky day, Saltburn
Community Hall looked a picture. Walking into the timber-framed hall, the
pre-gig hard work had been done - tables and chairs set out, candles being lit,
the audience soon to arrive. The Jake Leg Jug Band is a popular outfit in
Saltburn-by-the-Sea...
Brisk advance sales suggested there
would be a good turn out. And, sure enough, come the seven thirty start, the
place was more than busy. Nobody's Dirty Business, as played by
Mississippi John Hurt, opened the show. Duncan Wilcox and Warren James ran the
show, making the introductions, sharing the vocals (there wasn't an
instrumental number all night), their bandmates (Wilcox Jr. included)
playing with great enthusiasm.
The two sets were nothing if not
varied: A Closer Walk with Thee, On the Road Again, Down
by the Riverside, all played with gusto. Blues, jazz, hokum, skiffle, St
James' Infirmary (a request) with the horns playing an effective
counter melody, to Goodnight Irene, thunderous applause spoke
volumes. Russell
