This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Album review: Isabella Isherwood - The Sweetest Sounds (Sabrina Records)

Isabella Isherwood (piano, vocals); Mike Allemana (guitar); Joe Policastro (bass); Alejandro Salazar (drums)

Yet another new jazz singer rolls off the conveyor belt. This may be Isherwood's debut as a recording artist but, as a live performer, she is held in high respect in her native Chicago where she has been featured with that city's symphony orchestra and at the local jazz festival as well as touring extensively in Europe. Not bad for a 23 year old.

The Sweetest Sounds sees Isherwood take a choice mix of standards, vintage pops, show tunes and a well known jazz classic and, if not making them her own, borrows them with interest that is compounded with repeated listening. This isn't totally surprising as the session was produced by Champian Fulton and readers of BSH will know the high regard I have for that singer.

The delights are many: unaccompanied voice and piano on My Buddy; the unbridled uptempo swing of The Song is You; the poignancy of the voice and bass on 'Round Midnight; Bob Dylan's Don't Think Twice, It's Alright revealing how good a song that is when sung by a singer.

A couple of fine Broadway songs: Till There Was You (The Music Man) and Time Heals Everything (Mack and Mabel); Amy Winehouse's Love is a Losing Game and five good old good ones - Devil May Care; The Sweetest Sounds; This Time the Dream's on me; Teach me Tonight; I Love Being Here With You - make this another vocal gem from 'over there'.

Special mention also of the contributions by guitar, bass and drums. Whether soloing or providing sensitive backing, Allemana, Policastro and Salazar take care of the business. I suspect this was more than just another day at the office! Lance
