Bebop Spoken There

Donovan Haffner ('Best Newcomer' 2025 Parliamentary Jazz Awards): ''I got into jazz the first time I picked up a saxophone!" - Jazzwise Dec 25/Jan 26

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Album review: Lisa Rich - Listen Here (Tritone Records/Bandcamp)

Lisa Rich (vocals);
David Kane (piano, electric piano, synthesizer, guiro, tambourine); Cameron Brown (acoustic bass); Michael Smith (drums); Marc Copland (piano tks 2,3, tenor sax solo tks 3, 4, soprano sax solo tk 9); Mike Crotty (trumpet, flugel, alto/tenor sax, flute, alto flute, bass clarinet)

Released in 1983 on vinyl, Rich's debut album Listen Here has now gone digital and is now available on BANDCAMP which is good news for those of us who like to hear high class jazz inclined vocalists singing high class songs composed by high class jazz inclined composers.

Listen Here ticks all of those boxes. Warm and sensuous, Rich has one of those voices that, even on uptempo numbers, entwines itself around your innermost emotions. Add five musicians who know what they're doing on an assortment of instruments and you have a cordon bleu recipe for a tasty musical dish.

It's incredible to think that although Listen Here was recorded over 40 years ago Rich only recorded three more albums since that auspicious beginning. However, the good news is that album number five is scheduled for Spring next year. One thing is sure, it won't hang you up the most! Lance

Nothing Like You (Bob Dorough/Fran Landesman); Listen Here (David Frishberg);  The Wine of May (Loonis McGlohon); Morning (Clare Fischer); Shaker Song (Beckenstein/Lasley/Willis); Bulgarian Folk Tune (Traditional); Time's Lie (Chick Corea/Neville Potter); Spring Can Really Hang You Up the Most (Tommy Wolf/Fran Landesman); The Drinking Song (Steve Kuhn); Can't Buy Me Love (John Lennon/Paul McCartney); D.C. Farewell (Richie Cole)
