This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Press release: Music Photographer Coming Home

John Lyons is an award-winning photographer specialising in live music and portrait photography, with a particular focus on photographing jazz musicians. 

John lives in Durham but, until recently, has worked in London in the technology industry. For the last ten years, he has been capturing musicians in jazz clubs, recording studios and other locations in London, with the occasional trip to New York. More locally, John has also captured musicians and performers in the north east, including being official photographer for the 2023 Hexham Jazz Festival and the 2024 and 2025 Durham Fringe Festivals.

In his photography, he aims to convey the passion and feeling behind the music and performer rather than just a straight capture of the event or gig. He believes that a great music photographer needs to be in love with the music and be able to anticipate and capture the expressive moments – capturing performers ‘in the moment’.

In May 2022, he won the Live Music category in the inaugural Abbey Road Music Photography Awards for his image of drummer David Mrakpor (pictured left) entitled Waiting for the Head, taken at the 606 Club in Chelsea. He has exhibited at a number of exhibitions, including the London Open A-rt Vision (LOAV) festival in 2022 and a solo exhibition at Hoxton Cabin in London in 2023. This year, he led an exhibition called 'The Space Between the Notes', at the Guildford Jazz and Soul Festival. In January 2025, he was awarded an Associateship by the Society of Photographers.

John retired from his London day job in the Summer to focus on his passion for photography and will be spending more time in the north east capturing musicians and other performers in the region. He is also part of a small team developing plans to relaunch a Durham Jazz Festival in October 2026.
