A recently formed ensemble, comprising four established figures on the region's jazz scene, would entertain the faithful at Blaydon Jazz Club. Arriving at the Black Bull on Bridge Street in bitterly cold temperatures, it would be an evening of coats and scarves worn, by musicians and punters alike.
The Finn-Keeble Group, co-led by drummer Abbie Finn and tenor saxophonist Harry Keeble, this evening it would be HK who would handle most of the introductions. Modern jazz standards, including Michael Brecker's Tumbleweed (Keeble in paint-stripping form), Max Roach's Libra and McCoy Tyner's Passion Dance, one or two original compositions, including So It's True from the Abbie Finn Trio's 2023 On Pink Lane album, on this evidence, the quartet, featuring the principals Finn and Keeble, pianist Dean Stockdale and bassist John Pope, is shaping up nicely.
Next month, Monday December 8th, the Sue Ferris Quintet will be wrapping up another successful year at Blaydon Jazz Club. It's an eight o'clock start, a tenner at the door. Russell
