This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. R.I.P. Cleo Laine (1927 - July 24, 2025)


La Grande Dame of Uk (and the world) jazz singing died yesterday at the age of 97.
What memories I have of seeing her and enjoying that distinctive throaty voice. Going back through the years to hearing her with, husband to be, Johnny Dankworth's Seven to the last time at the then Sage Gateshead in 2011.

On that occasion her daughter Jacqui Dankworth was also singing and her son Alec Dankworth was on bass. Both are still at the forefront of British jazz's greatest dynasty.

If they asked me I could write a book but so many words have been written already so I'll remember her with this beautiful rendition of Shakespeare's It Was a Lover and his Lass.
