This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) R.I.P. Tom Lehrer (1928 - July 26, 2025)

Tom Lehrer died last Saturday (July 26) at the grand old age of 97. His name may not mean much to today's anti-this, anti-that activists but back in the '50s his satirical lyrics were both cutting edge and poignantly funny at the same time.

I almost wore out my two Lehrer 10" LPs through repetitive playing. I almost got to see him in concert at Newcastle City Hall but that's another story.

I still have the records and maybe I'll dig them out and see if they still draw a smile.

Tom Lehrer was by no means a jazzman but he had the ability to poke fun at the establishment in a manner that was jazz in spirit if not in content.

I wonder if he has any unpublished writings about the current US administration bearing in mind he was a Harvard man?
