Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Dean Stockdale Trio @ Auckland Castle - Dec. 13

Dean Stockdale (piano); Mick Shoulder (double bass); John Bradford (drums)

Another full house in the Old Library, standing room only. Bishop Auckland Jazz is doing something right, that's for sure. To conclude a run of sold out concerts during 2024, pianist Dean Stockdale brought in his A-list trio featuring bassist Mick Shoulder and drummer John Bradford. A couple of Christmas trees, one or two Christmas jumpers sighted, bottles of wine on tables, yes, it's that time of year.

A couple of Dean Stockdale compositions, an old Stockdale arrangement of a classic GASbook number, a brace of Oscar P and the almost obligatory Christmas songs - the ideal balance for a pre-Christmas gig. January Blues anticipated the annual credit card max-out blues, Have You Met Miss Jones? followed by Oscar Peterson's Bossa Beguine banished any such day-to-day concerns and when Stockdale announced Winter Wonderland, there was an audible groan from 'Bah Humbug' Shoulder - all good fun! It's that time of year, resistance is futile...

OP's Night Train is for any time of day or night, anytime of year. On this thirteenth day (a Friday) of December, no one, but no one could object to Mel Tormé's Christmas Song, a bona fide classic. Some time ago pianist Stockdale penned an arrangement of Johnny Green's Out of Nowhere. This afternoon DS dusted off the chart and the trio played it. Excellent. Ah, the trio...Mick Shoulder, a most sympathetic bass player, and John Bradford, the 'go-to' drummer for more than one bandleader. Here at Auckland Castle, the Dean Stockdale Trio signed-off with another seasonal selection, Franz Gruber's carol, Silent Night.
