Bebop Spoken There

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Farewell John Broddle

Tynemouth Crematorium was, quite literally, standing room only. We were there to pay our respects to John Broddle. Entering the chapel, we were listening to Willie Nelson singing Stardust. Folk from all walks of life were present, not least a sizeable contingent of John's many jazz friends. In a service conducted by Julia Graham, two of John's granddaughters spoke lovingly of John, recalling many happy times. We heard about John's time on the books of Hull City FC, National Service and a working life down on North Shields' Fish Quay. A recording (perhaps from Cullercoats Crescent Club) of John singing I'll See You in My Dreams hit the spot and we filed out of the chapel to the sounds of Michael Nesmith singing a sun-filled Rio.

It was but a short hop down to the seafront to one of John's favourite haunts - the Crescent Club. The downstairs lounge was bulging at the seams, many standing, bar staff working their socks off. The music - there just had to be jazz! - came courtesy of Maureen Hall's Rendezvous Jazz. Maureen and the boys began without ceremony, the set list simply a selection of numbers John heard (and sang with Maureen's band, the Vieux Carré Jazzmen and other outfits) on countless occasions. Numbers included Alexander's Ragtime BandWay Down Yonder in New OrleansEverybody Loves My Baby and Do You Know What it Means to Miss New Orleans? The band: Maureen Hall (vocals); Gavin Lee (clarinet, alto sax); Gordon Solomon (trombone); Alf Langthorne (keyboards); John Robinson (bass guitar); Ian Stocks (drums).
