This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Dean Masser Quartet @ the Moor Club, Heaton Moor - Dec. 15

After last week's frustrating experience due to so many train cancellations I decided that the best way of getting to this gig was by taxi and, after the gig, I used the same company to take me home to Handforth. It was an expensive night out but I thought it was worth it as Dean always puts on a great show. This was his first appearance at the Moor Club and there were many jazz fans present who used to attend the Railway so that by the 8:00pm start all of the seats were taken.

Dean always has interesting sidemen and sharing the solo space with him was a keyboard player Richard Harrold who I had not seen before but he could certainly play and I must find out more about this fine musician.


Ed Harrison who, like Dean, lives in Wigan produced some rock-solid basswork whilst on drums we heard Gaz Hughes who I am sure will by now be well known to audiences throughout the UK from his extensive touring.


Like myself, Dean is a big fan of the late great Dexter Gordon and as his opening number he chose Dexter’s Fried Bananas to get things rolling with the rest of his programme containing a mixture of familiar jazz classics and standards.


He did however, include one of his own compositions Well Red and finished the second set with a spirited rendition of St Thomas. 


Once again a very successful night of modern jazz and next week (Sunday Dec. 22) another local tenorman, Mike Hall, will be here leading the Mike Hall Quartet. Mike Farmer
