It wasn't exactly party time at the Lit & Phil today with not a sprig of mistletoe in sight - next year I'll bring my own! This, I hasten to add, was no reflection on the music which was smooth and acceptable all year round with a particular leaning towards the late Wes Montgomery which isn't a bad place for a guitarist to lean on.
Herbert's playing was cool and relaxed, mixing single string, horn-like passages with some chunky chords voiced imaginatively and well deserving of the accolades bestowed on him from near and far.
Of course the frontman in a trio is only as good as the inspiration received from the other two and, in that respect, he was on a winner. Portuguese bassist Canha got a beautiful sound from the stick bass and took some melodic solos. On drums, Stobart (sorry about the photo) was unobtrusive and sympathetic apart from the occasional solo break.
The fireworks may have been minimal but the mood was sublime. It had to be for those who'd struggled to cope with the ongoing travel problems they'd suffered to get there.
The music stayed with me on my journey home helping to placate my growing frustration at performing the seemingly simple act of getting from A to B ... Lance
