The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. R.I.P. Gordon Marshall

In a week already saddened with personal grief comes the news that trumpet player Gordon Marshall passed away today.

Gordon, lead trumpet with the Strictly Smokin' Big Band, graced the presence of many local big bands. His presence in the brass section of any band ensured there was no lack of power.

I remember many evenings we spent with the late Brian Fisher when the three of us would sit, sup a glass of vino and listen to records by Ellington, Kenton, Basie and many others.

I'm sure that listening to Cat Anderson, Maynard Ferguson  and the brothers Candoli helped him on his way to becoming the in demand player he became.

Agreed Tommy. A modest man of great ability who deserved better recognition. However, all the local trumpet players had no doubts of his standing. As you yourself told me no less a person than Bruce Adams rated him very highly and there is no greater praise for a lead trumpet player than that.

He anchored the Big Idea for many years and also was a key player(in Big Blunt End with Rick Taylor (now also gone). Lovely guy to boot.
