Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Dulcie May Moreno @ the Lit & Phil, Newcastle - Feb. 16

Dulcie May Moreno (vocals); Mark Williams (guitar); Mick Shoulder (double bass); John Bradford (drums)

After last night's gig in Durham, Dulcie's whistle-stop, mini tour of the north east continued with a lunchtime stop off at the Lit & Phil.

As always, the monthly concerts at this historic building (dating back to 1825) were  sold out in advance and those perceptive punters who'd booked early weren't disappointed.

Dulcie's rich tones, her acute sense of pitch and a cute smile captured the eyes and ears of the listeners.

True, the presentation could have been smoother, more polished but, hey! this was only the second time that she'd met up with Mark Williams and Mick Shoulder (a.k.a Mick Bishop) and the first time since last October with John Bradford who isn't known as John Huddersfield.

The hour passed in sixty minutes with, surprisingly, no one responding to her request for any requests. This was unusual given the presence of many (not all) of the Tyneside jazz intelligentsia.

Next month (March 15) features the Mark Williams' Trio. So don't hang about, it too is sold out so if you've missed the boat get in there and onto the cancellation list. Lance

You and the Night and the Music; The More I See You; Take me to New York; Humility Blues; Dat Dere; Let’s Get Lost; Mercy, Mercy Mercy; Besame Mucho; I’m Comin’ Home Baby
