Bebop Spoken There

Ludovic Beier (Django Festival Allstars): ''Manouche means 'free man,' and gypsies have been travelers since they migrated west from India to Europe.'' (DownBeat March, 2026)

The Things They Say!

This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) North. (M & SSBB on F/book 23/12/24)

Reviewers wanted

Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Interested? then please get in touch. Contact details are on the blog. Look forward to hearing from you. Lance

Olly Styles @ King's Hall, Newcastle University - Feb. 29

Olly Styles (tenor sax); Jacob Egglestone (trumpet); Conor Emery (trombone); Jenny Sykes ? (keyboards); Jamie Watkins (bass guitar); Josh Weir (drums)

Four o'clock, Thursday, term time in King's Hall it's student performances, ranging from classical to folk, rock and pop, and, of course, jazz. This week, tenor saxophonist Olly Sykes represented the jazz element here at Newcastle University.

The usual format is two numbers and that's it, move on, move over. Styles took to the floor with a bunch of recognisable faces, at least five of Styles' sextet have been seen and heard at jam sessions around town and, increasingly, gigging in bands of their own. Two numbers, first up, Bobby Timmons' Moanin'. A strong opening statement, solos from recent graduate Jacob Egglestone, trumpet (not his first instrument, guitar), and up-and-coming trombonist Conor Emery, Styles taking it out with an impressive coda.

Charles Mingus' Better Git it in Your Soul maintained the hard-driving bebop end of the spectrum, handclaps and all, solos from postgrad bassist Jamie Watkins and undergraduate drummer Josh Weir, Styles once more taking it out. Impressive stuff, keep an eye and ear open for Olly Styles. Friday 22nd March sees Nauta at Hoochie Coochie (doors 7:30pm, free admission), Mr O. Styles will be in the band. Go check 'em out.
