This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Preview: The Giles Strong Quartet - The Old Black Cat Jazz Club, Sunderland (Fri. 17)

Tomorrow (Friday 17 February) sees the launch of the Old Black Cat Jazz Club! Wearside could do with a regular session promoting jazz to the Sunderland public and and this is it. Seventeen Nineteen is the place, a beautifully restored Georgian church in Hendon, Sunderland. Why 'Seventeen Nineteen'? you ask. Well, the now listed building opened in 1719, hence the name.
A concert by the brilliant Giles Strong Quartet makes for a perfect start. Virtuoso guitarist Giles will be joined by Pete Tanton (trumpet/flugelhorn), Ian Paterson (double bass) and drummer John Bradford. Expect a mix of choice standards and one or two accomplished original compositions. The evening gets under way at seven o'clock, on street parking is available, alternatively it's a few minutes' stroll from Sunderland Metro station.
