This is a good opportunity to say thanks to BSH for their support of the jazz scene in the North East (and beyond) - it's no exaggeration to say that if it wasn't for them many, many fine musicians, bands and projects across a huge cross section of jazz wouldn't be getting reviewed at all, because we're in the "desolate"(!) Whilst BSH attempts to cover as many gigs, festivals and albums as possible, to make the site even more comprehensive we need more 'boots on the ground' to cover the albums seeking review - a large percentage of which never get heard - report on gigs or just to air your views on anything jazz related. Preview: The Giles Strong Quartet - The Old Black Cat Jazz Club, Sunderland (Fri. 17)

Tomorrow (Friday 17 February) sees the launch of the Old Black Cat Jazz Club! Wearside could do with a regular session promoting jazz to the Sunderland public and and this is it. Seventeen Nineteen is the place, a beautifully restored Georgian church in Hendon, Sunderland. Why 'Seventeen Nineteen'? you ask. Well, the now listed building opened in 1719, hence the name.
A concert by the brilliant Giles Strong Quartet makes for a perfect start. Virtuoso guitarist Giles will be joined by Pete Tanton (trumpet/flugelhorn), Ian Paterson (double bass) and drummer John Bradford. Expect a mix of choice standards and one or two accomplished original compositions. The evening gets under way at seven o'clock, on street parking is available, alternatively it's a few minutes' stroll from Sunderland Metro station.
